I figured this was just a front end… doesn’t seem to be. Holy wow, this is amazing! :)

Hitman Pro is great. I’ve been using it for years on my friend’s and family’s computers.

Someone claimed it downloads the other programs when you run it. I prefer being able to install antispyware softare while standalone from the network (safe mode if need possible) to be able to fix really pooched up computers.

Also I find Spybot and ad-aware have lost their edge

because it is very effective at removing very persistent malware, especially the latest threats (XP antispyware 2008 for example) and can install and run in safe mode from an already downloaded installer, and definitions file.

is another really good antispyware program.

it’s very nice-ah

Seems to me it is just a front end. First time I ran it, it downloaded AdAware SE and Spybot S&D. Hitman Pro may provide some additional features/functionality, but basically, it doesn’t seem to be anything more than a front end.

This was featured recently and I’ve been running it for a long time, even installing it on my customer’s systems.

2.76 is very good. However, it does NOT run current versions of AdAware nor SpywareBlaster (SE & 3.51 respectively).

I’m beta’ing v3 which, unfortunately, does NOT run any other apps and looks to be going commercial (rather than freeware). The beta is only a 1 week trial which later asks for a paid registration.

if i already have spybot and adaware 2008 will it install over them(or in adawares case have both 2008 and se)?

It froze up every time I tried to run it,I am not sure why,I closed all other programs but it would freeze at different points.

I also have switched over to Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware as I find it to the the most thorough.

: I found that they have lost their edge too. I’ve switched over to the free version of PC Tools Spyware Doctor instead. It seems to scan much faster than Spybot or Ad-Adware and pick up just as much or more.

The 3.0 version doesn’t “download” versions of the programs but runs them online apparently (you can’t see what is going on, the program just has a progress bar and tells you virtually nothing about what is happening. It went FAR faster (10-15 minutes or so) then it is possible to run even one of these programs stand alone with anything other than the most cursory “light” scan. It didn’t install anything other than itself, and was quick and easy to uninstall. It found no problems on my computer, which is fair enough as I take pretty good care of my system, but I’m sure that at a minimum I have some “tracking cookies” that these programs always complain about in stand alone mode, and Hitman didn’t see a thing. Just my opinion, but based on the ridiculously fast scanning time and lack of any results (and it’s been several weeks since my last scan), this is doing a very light surface scan and I don’t plan to rely on it.

It told me I had to buy one of the programs to remove the bad cookies it detected. Free to install, free to run, and Hitman Pro will do it, but removing things? Better pay up.

I would like to use this, but some trial programs are included. When the trial periods are over, you either have to pay or disable them.

Looks like version 3 will be commercial

Just use Malwarebytes, finds stuff the others leave behind.

this kind of software reminds me why I moved from Windows to Mac for my personal laptop. (and don’t worry I’m not an apple fanboy, I still use both).

When I first switched, I was sometimes too bored with the Mac - there was nothing to maintain! What was I going to do with my spare time?!

: Another vote for Malwarebytes - it’s been pretty solid, and again, AdAware and Spybot have certainly become less effective in the past several years. It’s a shame too - they used to be the go-to spyware fighters, but nothing lasts forever, I suppose.

: I don’t why there is this sentiment that Spybot is “becoming less effective” - these days, they have updates nearly every day. Are these updates just not as comprehensive as other programs’ updates?

: My personal install of Windows is maintenance free, I just use these tools on people’s computers that are too retarded to know how to use a comptuer and click and download everytime they can find, then bring their computer to me to fix.

: One thing is Spybot is not good at deleting files that are currently in use. It will offer to run after rebooting, which with persistent spyware will still be in use, and you have to wait for it to scan again, which really badly infected systems can take a long time.

MBAM is better at viciously killing in-use files.

That would be true if all 5 blades were identical. In this case, they use different approaches, different algorithms, etc.

: You turned on the optional programs, either SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor.

Sorry, but it really just sounds like you’re trying to sell another program. I’ve been using Spybot for a while now and I personally haven’t had any problems with it deleting anything or with this reboot problem you describe. It sounds more like you’re just putting down another program so you can sell a new one.

And if by ‘losing it’s edge’, you mean another program can do one thing better (you mention only one thing I actually does better, implying Spybot does everything else better), then you can keep it. Anything else you wanna talk about, please come up with actual facts and numbers.

: Maybe because Sub7 is a trojan and not Spyware, and all these programs are spyware detectors

!! I was not amused what this app did on my machine!!

3. Launches the Windows disk cleaner without prompt or information (there are cookies and internet files which I which I keep on the machine intentionally)

I keep a clean machine using free tools such as CCleaner and sometimes my own scripts (for removing hotfix & associated backup files etc.) so I am not impressed at all. I would rate this tool at 1/5 till I can be convinced otherwise!

: It sounds like you’re big into having complete control over what a program does. Understandable.

The reason you shouldn’t give this program a 1/5 is because it still is a pretty good program. It’s meant for the AVERAGE user who’d rather use one program instead of 6. They may not have thought of one or two features (minor, in my opinion) that are obviously deal breakers for you, but that doesn’t take away from the programs merits.

don’t recall if it was recommended here, but I have been using A Squared Free by emsisoft for a while now. Seems to work OK.

(I do not like McAfee, Symantec, or Antivirus applications that are installed like a rootkit or annoy the user with complicated updates, uninstallers and impractical adware-spamming information. But that is just me…)

: of course, careful usage and some experience/wisdom goes a long way. I found that most folks I know with problems are usually doing something like peer to peer sharing.

AVG is telling me that hitmanpro3.exe is infected with Worm/Autoit.EXA

I got a warn from my ESET antivirus for a WIN32/Packed.Autoit.gen application. Does this thing got malware with it??

I’m sorry, I tried this twice, but it’s complete garbage. It stopped twice, for no reason, more than 3/4 through each scan. What a waste of time.

: And say “Oh look here’s ‘latestmovie-dvd-rip.avi.exe’”

I got a warning from my anti virus also, so I am not going to run this. I am using AVG anti virus.

: I have no affiliation with MBAM other than being a satisfied user. If you look, several other people here seem quite satisfied with it as well. Never once did I say buy it, I just said use it. It is free to use if you don’t want real-time protection.

malware is a major minus. If I’m trying to give someone phone support on removing malware, I’d rather have them run a tool that will detect and remove files rather than have to take additional manual steps to remove in use files.

This is another reason why I prefer Avast to AVG. Avast has a boot time scan that will run during text-mode of startup, meaning it has an opportunity to run before a lot of background services, etc can start.

: No, it just means it was written with AutoIt. AutoIt by itself isn’t harmful, but some people use it to write harmful applications. As such, many A/V and Malware applications have a kneejerk reaction and flag anything written in AutoIt. I would suggest sending a report to ESET about false positives.

Warning, danger, danger Will Robinson! It removed my automatic update software from work. Said it did a checkpoint, but there does not appear to be a way of restoring the checkpoint. I emailed their support. No answer, no support.

I RAN THIS TWICE AND BOTH TIMES IT FROZE, I HAD TO DO A SYSTEM RESTORE AND TRY IT AGAIN. THEN IT TELLS ME I HAVE A WORM ( C.I.A.) IN A PROGRAM THAT I KNOW IT IS NOT. I RAN NORTON, AVAST, AND A FEW OTHERS AND ITS NOT. I ALSO RESEARCHED THE .EXE FILE IN eBoostr AND IT IS HARMLESS.THIS PROGRAM IS A NICE IDEA FOR AUTOMATED MULTIPLE SCANNING ENGINES BUT ITS A LITTLE BUGGY & ALSO IT SOON TO BE A PAY $$$ PROGRAM ! .. NO THANKS.-BUDMANN

AVS flagged the program and installer as a trojan here too.

too messy…i gave up
